The Devil’s Advocate and the Deals We Make

Recently, I saw a trailer for The Devil’s Advocate, and curiosity got the better of me. I decided to watch it. Between work and exhaustion, I carved out two hours, finishing it in the early hours of the next day. The silence of the night made the film’s heavy themes feel even more suffocating.
Watching Kevin Lomax navigate the high-stakes world of New York law felt like watching a man walk a tightrope made of silk and fire. Every step looked confident, but every choice burned a little deeper. As I sat there, bleary-eyed, I felt the weight of his exhaustion. My own life, the balancing act of work, ambition, and the limited hours in a day, seemed to echo on the screen.
Then the lesson hit me, just as the first light of dawn crept through my window:
The most dangerous deals we make aren’t signed in blood in marble offices; they are the quiet, daily concessions we make to our own pride.
I realized that no matter how powerful the devil is, he cannot force you to sin. He can only present the opportunity. The choice always comes from your own will.
James 1:14–15 says,
“Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”
That’s the truth. With each small compromise, the enemy brings the next temptation, one that pushes you just a little further to see if you’ll bend. And if you keep bending, you eventually break. You reach a point where your conscience dies completely.
It’s never one big fall; it’s a slow erosion. A thousand small “yeses” to pride, ambition, and self.
Through the darkness of that courtroom drama, one thing stood out: love conquers all. Kevin’s love for his wife, Mary Ann, was the only thing powerful enough to break the devil’s hold and give him the strength to overcome that final temptation.
In our own lives, God’s love is that same strength, the anchor that keeps us from drifting into darkness. Romans 8:37 reminds us,
“In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
It’s a sobering reminder that while “winning” might feel like everything, the true victory isn’t found in a pedestal or a paycheck. It’s found in the love that anchors us to what is right.
As the sun rose that morning, I sat quietly, thinking about the deals I’ve made, not with contracts or signatures, but with silence, pride, and compromise.
The devil doesn’t always come with horns and fire; sometimes he comes dressed as ambition, opportunity, or applause. But the Word says in Matthew 16:26,
“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?”
That verse echoed louder than any line in the movie.
So now, I remind myself daily:
The greatest victory is not in winning arguments or climbing ladders; it’s in keeping your soul intact.
It’s in choosing love over pride, truth over comfort, and God over everything else.
