The Church, Politics, and the Burden of Silence

REFLECTIONS

Many of you may have developed amnesia, because at the height of the crisis involving the killing of Christians, the very person all of you are defending said, and I quote, “Many people are not telling my in-law the truth.”

So, is he saying that the president does not know what he is doing? Why is there always a need to defend the president?

In the same way, he defended the president on the economy, saying that people were trying to sabotage the government and that was why the dollar was rising. He blamed everyone except the president.

So the president who failed to do adequate research before announcing the removal of the fuel subsidy should not be blamed? The president who has borrowed more than any previous administration within three years should not be held responsible?

A president who kept children standing in the rain in Benue State during his visit, weeks after the killings in the state. He did this even after concerns had been raised by the Pope. Imagine that.

Just recently, he defended why the First Lady is still a pastor. So, can you now see that those of you trying to gaslight people are not helping matters? Nobody is even saying you should come out and protest. Personally, I understand if you choose not to speak against the government because of personal interests. I can understand silence. What I cannot understand is speaking only to defend the administration.

This is someone who said the president should ask the United States to delay its intervention for 100 days. At a time when people are being killed every day, he said nothing until the U.S. announced it would intervene.

I believe God gave us a voice for a reason. If you will not use it to speak up for the people of God, at least show concern.

There are men of God today whose names Nigerians will defend because they have consistently spoken against injustice and government failures. There is a hymn I love very much:

“Your life’s a book before their eyes,

They’re reading it through and through.”

People are not stupid. They know who stands with them.

There was a video of a bus donated to a church being used to campaign for the administration, and the church leadership did not condemn it. When new taxes were introduced and people were crying out, one church even organized a session to teach people how to comply with them. People are paying attention.

So before you start gaslighting people, listen to what they are saying.

Back in 2015, when Pastor Emmanuel Bosun was warning that APC would bring disaster to the nation, the father of that church publicly denounced him, and APC leaders praised the church for doing so.

And now people wonder why some Nigerians blame those they believe helped APC come to power. The perception has always been that the body language was tilted in favor of that party.

People are dying, and yet we are turning this into a debate about personalities.

The Gospel demands courage, not compromise. The prophets of old stood against kings when injustice reigned. Nathan confronted David. Elijah stood against Ahab. John the Baptist rebuked Herod.

Where are those voices today?

You do not stand with Pharaoh; you stand against Pharaoh.

In the end, let God be true and every man a liar.

Before you disagree, take time to study the events and statements from 2014 till now. See the patterns. See the silence. See the defense of power at the expense of truth.
