Music Unlocks Memories, A Journey Through Time
"Music has the power to transport us back in time, unlocking memories we thought were long forgotten. In this reflective piece, I recount a moment when a simple worship song, Alpha and Omega by Israel and New Breed, brought back vivid memories of my first term in boarding school. What started as a night of music transformed into an atmosphere of prayer and divine encounter. This blog explores how music marks our journey, reminding us of where we were and where we are now, proving that melodies do more than entertain, they awaken something deep within us."

"Music unlocks memories, it shows where you were and where you are."
Recently, while scrolling through YouTube Music, a familiar melody began to play, "Alpha and Omega" by Israel and New Breed. As the opening notes filled the room, something stirred within me, a wave of nostalgia that transported me back to my first term in secondary school at G.S.S Dangara.
It was a time of transition, the school shifting from a day school to a boarding house, and with that came the chaos of adjustment. The hostels weren’t ready, so the teachers’ quarters became makeshift dormitories for both boys and girls. We were close enough to hear each other, yet distant enough to have our separate experiences.
I had brought my handset, a simple China phone, with a memory card packed with songs. Most of them were Christian music, though country songs had found their way into my heart thanks to my father’s influence. But because of the tight security around the boys’ quarters, I handed my phone over to a girl for safekeeping.
That night, as songs played and laughter filled the air, Alpha and Omega began to resonate through the girl’s quarters. What happened next was nothing short of divine intervention.
A Song That Shifted the Atmosphere
The atmosphere changed instantly. Voices rose, not in conversation or dance, but in prayer. Some began to confess, surrendering burdens they had carried silently. Others spoke in tongues, caught in a moment far beyond human understanding. It didn’t matter their background or religious affiliation, the presence of God swept through that place like a rushing wind.
The hostel remained in that state for a long time, the echoes of that song lingering not just in the room, but in their souls. And now, years later, as I sit here listening to the same song, every detail rushes back, the voices, the prayers, the overwhelming sense that we were standing on holy ground.
Music truly unlocks memories.
Where We Were, Where We Are
That moment wasn’t just a memory, it was a marker, a reminder of where I was and where I am now. It showed me that some experiences aren’t meant to be forgotten, that God plants them in our hearts to remind us of His presence, even in the most unexpected moments.
The power of worship, the strength of a single song to bring transformation, remains undeniable. It makes me wonder, how many moments in our lives have been shaped by music? How many times has a melody been the key that unlocks a door we thought had been closed forever?
Even now, as I listen, I realize that some songs aren’t just sounds. They are timestamps, divine encounters woven into notes and lyrics, waiting for us to hear them again and remember.
Because music doesn’t just entertain, it awakens.
