Knowing Myself : The Patterns That Shape My Life
Understanding yourself is one of the greatest keys to success. Patterns in your life—whether in decisions, habits, or opportunities—can reveal cycles that shape your journey. From realizing how frequently I sat for JAMB to recognizing what fuels my productivity, I’ve learned that knowing yourself allows you to predict outcomes, make better choices, and break cycles when necessary. Success isn’t just about effort; it’s about awareness, strategy, and intentional growth.

One of the greatest quotes I’ve heard recently comes from Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou: "I don’t usually win things, but I always win things in my second season." When I first heard that, I paused because he wasn’t just making an empty statement; he had studied his patterns, analyzed the cycles in his life, and realized that success always came in his second season.
And then, he went ahead and proved it, winning the club’s first trophy in 17 years.
That got me thinking; how well do I know myself? Have I truly sat down to examine the events and patterns shaping my life?
The Patterns I Never Noticed
There was a time in my life when I found myself writing JAMB every two years. At first, I didn’t think much of it; it felt normal. But then, even after I had already gained admission to the university, I sat for the exam again without realizing why.
It wasn’t until the results came back that I finally stopped and asked myself; What is wrong with me?
That was the moment I discovered the cycle. Every two years, without fail, I had been sitting for JAMB, as though locked in a pattern I didn’t even know existed.
We go through life repeating habits, unaware of how deeply they are ingrained in us.
Using My Strengths to Win
I’ve also realized that my commitment, excitement, and zeal are what drive me to complete projects. That initial passion pushes me to execute plans on time; but I know something about myself; the excitement eventually fades.
I don’t always wake up with the same energy, the same push, the same fire; so, I put systems in place. I surround myself with people who ensure that I stay on track, even when the excitement dies; that way, the work still gets done, even when my emotions shift.
I also know that I excel in my first term of school; that’s why I put all my effort there. I pour all my strength into making sure that no matter how bad I do in the remaining terms, my foundation is strong enough to hold me up.
The Importance of Recognizing Patterns
Some cycles must be studied; others must be broken.
For my JAMB situation, once I recognized the pattern, I had to pray about it; I knew that if I didn’t take it to God, I would keep repeating the same mistake without even realizing it.
The Bible tells us in Hosea 4:6; "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge."
Not just knowledge of God, but knowledge of self.
Success isn’t just about talent or opportunity; it’s about recognizing your strengths, understanding your weaknesses, and making adjustments accordingly.
Do Yourself a Favour, Study Your Life
Take time to notice the patterns in your life. Ask yourself why certain things keep happening, some habits refuse to break, and some cycles never seem to end. When you start analysing your own data, you gain the ability to predict outcomes, make better choices, and set yourself up for success.
Because the difference between winning and struggling isn’t just effort; it’s awareness.
